But for Christian believers the one essential element is a nativity scene, because the original meaning of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Christ. If you have ever been to Bethlehem like I have, then you can imagine the real surroundings of the manger and nativity scene. Bethlehem lies near Jerusalem amongst the rolling Judaen Hills. Despite what we imagine of that region, Bethlehem is at a high elevation and does get cold in the winter. So you can imagine how cold it was during time time of Jesus birth, and that's one of the reasons it was such a shocking thing to sleep in a manger.
